British Thoracic Society Guideline Management of COPD & BTS Guidelines on Ventilatory Management of Acute Hypercapnea in Adults

Scoring System

MRC Dyspnoea Scale for breathless in COPD

​

A 1-5 grading system, with a descriptive comment regarding the level of breathlessness a patients perceives

​

  1. Not troubled by breathlessness except of vigorous exertion

  2. Short of breath when hurrying or walking up inclines

  3. Walks slower than contemporaries because of breathlessness, or has to stop for breath when walking at own pace

  4. Stops for breath after walking about 100m or stops after a few minutes walking on the flat

  5. Too breathless to leave the house or breathless on dressing/ADLs
